Valve has announced Average daily controller usage on Steam has tripled from five percent to 15 percent since 2018.

Xbox controllers are the most popular on Steam with 59 percent of sessions use one. This is followed by PlayStation controllers with 26 percent and the Steam Deck with 10 percent.

It was also announced that Steam Input supports over 300 controllers when implemented in a game.

The team at Valve has added new features and improvements for Steam Input and controller users:

  • Big picture update – Completely redesigned the first controller experience on Steam to bring the Steam Deck user experience to the big screen

  • New controller configurator – Revised and simplified configurator for setting, managing and editing controller bindings

  • Gyro aiming – revised and improved experience for controllers with gyro, implemented flickstick functionality in Steam Input

  • Virtual menus – Added support for the desktop client

  • Support for PlayStation controllers – We’ve worked with Sony to improve support for PS controllers including DualSense Edge and can now automatically support future licensed third-party PlayStation gamepads

  • Xbox controller support – We have shipped a driver for Windows that allows us to better support Xbox One controllers, including the rear buttons on Xbox Elite controllers
