Lombardi trophies stop in Jefferson City amid Chiefs-Royals stadium saga

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (KMIZ)

Kansas City’s back-to-back trophies made a stop in Jefferson City on Thursday afternoon. Governor Mike Parson and a crowd of Chiefs fans took photos with the Lombardi trophies at the Missouri State Capitol.

The arrival of the Kansas City equipment comes as the border war between Missouri and Kansas intensifies. Over the past few weeks, the Sunflower State has adopted a plan to make it more attractive for both the Chiefs and the Royals to move across the border to Kansas.

The bill, signed by Governor Laura Kelly, would allow state bonds to finance new facilities for both teams on the Kansas side. In total, the bill could finance up to 70 percent of the cost of a new stadium for one or both teams.

On Thursday, Governor Parson commented on the ongoing stadium saga.

“This is about competition, this is about a deal and we’re going to make sure we get the best deal possible to make sure Arrowhead stays Arrowhead, here in the state of Missouri, and that the Royals continue their future here in Missouri,” he said. “Look, I can’t blame Kansas for trying to do what they’re trying to do, you know. If I was sitting there, I’d probably do the same thing, but at the end of the day, we’re going to be competitive.”

The Chiefs’ current lease runs through 2031, so Governor Parson said the state of Missouri still has time to come up with a plan to keep the reigning Super Bowl champions in the “Show-Me State.”

“We’re going to meet with people from the Kansas City area to try to get something done from a state perspective,” he said.
