The simple trick to give your smart speakers a much better sound

Welcome to Product Supporta column designed to help you get the most out of the things you already use.

Most smart speakers can only play mono sound, as opposed to stereo sound, because they only have one driver and can only play audio through one channel. This is the case with all popular (and affordable) smart speakers, such as the Amazon Echo ($99), Nest Audio ($99), and HomePod mini ($99). (Sonos’ latest entry-level smart speaker, the Era 100 ($249), can actually play stereo sound.)

However, for significantly better sound you only need one pair.

Basically, any affordable smart speaker can be paired with a twin to play audio in stereo, which greatly improves the sound quality. It only takes a few seconds and once done, your speakers will automatically play stereo audio; all major streaming services can play stereo audio because that’s how the tracks were originally recorded.

Mono has its advantages. It provides consistent sound throughout the room. This means that no matter where you are standing in relation to the speaker, you should hear virtually the same sound.
