Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka will rematch when Pereira defends the UFC light heavyweight title against the former champion at UFC 303.
Pereira, a kickboxing champion, quickly established himself by becoming the fastest fighter in UFC history to win two belts in two divisions (736 days/7 fights). The former UFC middleweight champion defeated Prochazka to win the vacant UFC light heavyweight title. “Poatan” last fought in April, knocking out Jamahal Hill.
Prochazka defeated Glover Teixeira in 2022 to win the UFC belt, but had to relinquish it due to a shoulder injury. He is 1-0 since fighting Pereira, having punished Aleksandar Rakic in April.
It’s a last-minute fight, as a planned fight between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler was cancelled due to an injury to McGregor. Pereira, who last fought in April, is recovering from broken toes and will now have to complete a short bout of fight training, but he is using his experience from kickboxing to adapt.
“It’s not the best way, of course, but for me it’s nothing new,” Pereira said on his YouTube channel, via Sherdog. “I’ve been through similar situations. My first fight was with Israel (Adesanya), in China, nobody knows, but I made two (trips) to China in 30 days. I went to interviews, took some photos, went back the next day, in and out of China… But for my fight it was complicated.
“After 30 days, I went back to the fight. (Losing weight) was the 85 kilos category in kickboxing. I did three stops, three stops to get to the goal. That made me very tired, I got there just in time to lose weight, lose weight, do my duties, go to the fight and win. This is nothing new for me. I am very mentally strong for it. I decided to do it. It’s what I want, let’s go.”
