Say goodbye to consoles and hello to streaming!
Microsoft and Amazon are teaming up to bring an Xbox app to select Fire TV devices.
While cloud gaming isn’t exactly new, this latest partnership represents a major development for the future of console gaming.
Starting in July, you’ll be able to download an Xbox app on Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023) and Fire TV Stick 4K (2023). Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will get access to all of the service’s cloud-enabled games, as long as they have a controller!
Can I stream games?
Unlike physical discs and downloaded games that are played directly from your console, cloud gaming requires you to connect to another device in another location. This other device actually runs the game and then streams the content to your display. Of course, this requires a stable and fast internet connection – preferably a wired one if possible.
Cloud gaming is very different from streaming movies, TV shows, and music, so even if you know your internet supports Netflix and Prime Video, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re equipped to stream games.
Because games are interactive, the time between pressing a button on a controller and movement on the screen is critical. If you shoot, dodge, jump or grab and it takes a few seconds for this to register on your screen, it could be game over!
If you’re not sure if your connection supports cloud gaming, you can test the service from the console you already have. Simply head to Game Pass on your console and look for any game with the cloud logo in the bottom right corner. If the game you load runs fine with minimal input lag, your connection is probably good enough for the new app.
Time to sell your Xbox?
In theory, you could sell your Xbox! If you only play games on Xbox through Game Pass, you should be covered with this new app. However, if your game library consists of physical games and individually purchased games, you won’t be able to access them, at least for now.
If you don’t rely too heavily on your own games library for gaming and think your internet can handle it – then why not sell your Xbox? A compatible Fire Stick is relatively inexpensive, especially compared to an expensive Xbox Series X.
