In August, Portland-based folk-rock band Fruition returns with How to make mistakestheir first studio album in four years. Their sixth studio album, which is due out on August 23rd, was produced solely by the band’s core quintet of Jay Cobb Anderson, Kellen Asebroek, Mimi Naja, Jeff Leonard and Tyler Thompson, and each of the album’s 13 songs was recorded “live on the floor”. In terms of lyrics, melody and production, the resulting album is about the longtime friends living in the here and now.

“Saturday Night”, the first single from How to make mistakes is out now, and is a testament to the ensemble’s renewed creative energy. Over the past fifteen years, the versatile quintet has garnered acclaim for its three-part harmonies and magnetic bluegrass sound. Those trademarks are clearly evident on the preview, which boasts soaring vocal overlays, winding slides, and a laid-back groove stitched together with eager experimental improvisation. “If you do it right, you’re bound to make mistakes,” Anderson explains, “and bruised fruit always tastes a little sweeter.”

To support the upcoming album, Fruition has announced new dates for its 2024 tour. The band will next take the stage on July 4th at Kit Carson Park in Taos, NM, with another appearance in the state capital of Santa Fe the following night at the Railyard. Shortly after, the band has several performances scheduled in their home state of Oregon, including Veneta’s Oregon Country Fair on July 12th and Bend’s Munch and Music on August 1st. Mama Magnolia and Joelton Mayfield will support the genre-bending band on select dates. Fruition will complete 18 more performances through the end of September, traversing Canada, the Mountain West, the Midwest and the East Coast.
