How to save money on July 4th

Grilling on the Fourth of July is an American tradition, but experts say celebrating the holiday could become more expensive this summer.

“Things are a little more expensive than they were last year, especially if you have guests,” says Caleb Silver of Investopedia. “If you’re making burgers or beef patties for about a dozen people, that’s currently about $18. You need propane or charcoal, which is currently about $11.”

But local supermarkets say they are helping their customers counteract the high prices.

“We have cheaper hot dogs, RS is a good brand that’s super cheap,” says Connor Garry, meat department manager at Cranbury Supermarket in Norwalk. “$2.49 for an eight-pack, you can’t beat that.”

A Norwalk resident told News 12 that it is important to stay within budget when hosting the Fourth of July Independence Day celebration.

“We actually host a party at our house,” says Jodi Leavy. “Up until a few years ago, we never did the potluck thing, but now we love it. Everyone is always willing to bring something, and usually you say, ‘No, don’t worry,’ but this year and last year we said let’s try it, and people have been very generous and helpful, and it makes the party a lot easier.”

Experts advise: Anyone who spends the holiday on the beach or plans a trip must expect parking fees and traffic jams.

“We know that a lot of people will be out and about this Fourth of July,” says Silver. “According to AAA, there are about 70 million.”
