Elden Ring: Shadow of the Earth Tree

The Dragon Cult School of Summoning in Elden Ring has always been pretty strong. It has fast-acting damage spells like Lightning Spear or Lightning Bolt, it has support spells with Electrification Armament or Dragon Bolt Blessing, and it even has gigantic AoE-type spells with Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Bolt or Florissax’s Dragon Bolt. But now, with The Shadow of the Earth Tree DLC, there is another addition that is universally popular.

Players can explore Caelid’s rotten swamps and abandoned ruins and find weapons to aid them in their quest to become Elden Lord.

However, obtaining this summon in the Lands of Shadow is quite complicated in many ways. To help players complete their collection of Dragon Cult summons, we’ll take a close look at the Knight’s Lightning Spear as a summon and where to find it. Elden Ring.

Of all the incantations and magic schools in Elden Ringthe Dragon Cult’s Incantations are probably the most versatile school/category. Anyone who likes dragon magic will be very happy with their options in this game, whether they choose Incantations or Sorcery. And the Knight Lightning Spear is a fantastic addition to this school, as it basically functions like a better (if riskier) Lightning Spear. It has a longer wind-up time and costs more FP than the regular Lightning Spear, but in return you get all those extra smaller Lightning Spears that follow the first Lightning Bolt thrown.

Honestly, it’s a direct upgrade of the standard Lightning Spearand it even seems like the many spears it throws sometimes confuse the enemy AI, causing them to just tank this summon in the face instead of dodging it. So while the Scorpion River Catacombs can be pretty difficult to master, for anyone with enough faith, this summon is more than worth the effort.

Location of the Knight Lightning Spear Summoning Formula

Buried deep in deadly catacombs

To obtain this summon, you must first find the Scorpion River Catacombsand that’s an adventure in itself. First, you’ll want to reach the Ancient Ruins Base Site of Grace, which is detailed in our Rauh Ruins Map Fragment Guide. From this Grace, you’ll want to:

  1. Head west toward the two giant stone golems (avoid the arrows as you approach).
  2. Just past these golems is the Rauh Ruins map fragment as well as the Temple City Ruins. Go into the Temple City and you should see the Temple City SoG right in front of you.
  3. From this Site of Grace, head directly north, following the river while avoiding (or killing) the Kindred of Rot.
  4. Continue following the river and you will encounter flying scorpion spiders. Continue following the river.
  5. When the river ends, you should see a cluster of open stone coffins, with one of those statues in the middle, indicating a catacomb.
  6. Follow the statue (it’s right next to it) and you’ll find the entrance to the Scorpion River Catacombs.

Actual summoning location in the Scorpion River Catacombs

But that is only half the battle, because You basically have to go through most of these catacombs to get this spell. The trick in this catacomb is the ghostly basilisk eyes that come from these basilisk statues and quickly fill your Death Plague meter when they look at you. Be sure to bring some Rejuvenation Boluses (or a certain talisman) to mitigate this status effect. And if you forget, you can also find some in the catacombs. Keep going until you climb up a ladder and reach this large open area with a bridge and a pair of ghostly basilisk eyes to your left. From here:

  1. From the ladder, go to the exact opposite side of the room (do not cross the bridge) and stand against the wall.
  2. As you approach the railing here, you’ll see the spike trap ceiling slam onto the ground below you.
  3. Choose your timing and jump over the railing to the top of the spike trap when it falls.
  4. Jump from the spike trap just behind the ghostly basilisk eyes.
  5. Follow the tunnel ahead of you and you should see a corpse slumped against the wall in the very next room.
  6. The two stone goblins in this small room will come to life as you get closer, so take them out as you wish.
  7. After defeating them, pick up the knight’s Lightning Spear spell from the corpse in the room.

From here, you can continue exploring the Scorpion River Catacombs to face the Death Knight at the end, or you can leave, the choice is yours. But you got what you came for, the Knight’s Lightning Spear, and you’ll quickly realize that all the effort was worth it.
