Biden’s debate game was hampered by his desire to say too much. “Less is always better,” says one speech coach.

  • Joe Biden’s performance during the debate disappointed Democrats, and even he knows it.

  • Voters were concerned about Biden’s age, which became clear during the debate.

  • Despite his age, it would have helped to simply speak more slowly and say less, a language coach told BI.

Even President Joe Biden knows his performance at the debate was not good.

Voters and lawmakers have long been concerned about Biden’s age, fearing that it will cause him to slow down and ponder replacement candidates.

But speaking more slowly and saying less might actually have helped him perform better in Thursday’s debate, Carmie McCook, a public speaking coach in Washington, DC, told Business Insider.

“Less is always better. Always. The more you throw out there, the more landmines you have to commit. Stay focused,” McCook said. “His team needs to know he’s having trouble following through on his target. Then just practice, get back to the message… Don’t let the other person take over and tell you what to say.”

Viewers seemed to agree that former President Donald Trump won the debate, even though he didn’t articulate himself particularly well either. Both candidates hope voters will overlook their obvious mistakes.

McCook said Biden also needs time to express his thoughts in words because he has a lifelong stutter, which is not good for his looks.

“I’m sure he was tired because they were probably practicing with him and he probably wasn’t comfortable,” McCook said. “He stutters and I work with a lot of people who have the same problem. I know sometimes it takes a while to find your words and it looks like you’re lost in thought because you’re trying to figure out, ‘What tongue muscles can I use? Or what alternate word can I use?'”

Max Burns, a Democratic strategist, said on X that Biden needs to go to rallies to “combat the stiff and aimless image he presented on Thursday.”

“Biden needs better (and frankly less) preparation going forward. He was clearly busy reciting long lists of data points rather than engaging more organically as he did in 2020. This can be worked on, but it needs to start now,” Burns posted on X.

McCook made similar arguments.

“Take your time,” she said. “Take your time. Don’t let the other person throw you off balance, because that’s what they’re there for. Stick to your three to five most important points, and that’s it.”
