Austrian GP: Race management punishes Yuki Tsunoda for swear words

SPIELBERG, Austria – RB driver Yuki Tsunoda has been fined for using “inappropriate language” over the team radio during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Race control summoned Tsunoda after audio appeared on his radio station in which he said “those guys are f***ing” in reference to his rivals. Although it was not broadcast on Formula 1’s global feed, live audio from each driver’s radio station is available on F1 TV.

After speaking to the Japanese driver, the race stewards imposed a fine of 40,000 euros, of which 20,000 euros will be suspended until the end of the season, provided he does not repeat the offence.

When determining his penalty, the race organizers took into account that English is Tsunoda’s second language.

“During Q1, as car 22 (Tsunoda) was waiting in the overtaking lane and another car moved into the overtaking lane in front of him, the driver was heard making a statement using offensive language over the team radio,” said a statement from race control.

“During the hearing, the driver apologised profusely and explained that as English was not his first language, he only learned after the hearing what the meaning of the words used was in the English language. He said he was horrified when he learned this.

“He claimed he had misunderstood the words but acknowledged that this should not be seen as an excuse for his behaviour.

“The race management appreciates the driver’s honesty, but stresses that the words used were offensive and completely inappropriate.

“The use of such words on a platform accessible to the public constitutes misconduct within the meaning of Article 20 of the International Sporting Code.”

“Taking into account the circumstances, the Stewards conclude that a heavy fine is necessary, but also take into account the driver’s sincere remorse and his offer to apologize publicly and, for these reasons, decide to suspend part of the fine imposed.”
