How much would the Yankees pay to trade the ideal replacement for Gleyber Torres?

The New York Yankees are one of the better teams in the MLB this season, but they still have some serious holes they need to fill.

One of those holes is in the infield, created by the poor play of Gleyber Torres at second base. This season, Torres has a batting average of .219/.296/.346 with an OPS+ well under 100. The Yankees second baseman is in the midst of the worst season of his major league career, and it comes at the worst possible time.

New York will have to look to improve on Torres as an everyday starter, but the infielder market is considered overpriced and full of unproven stars.

One of the names almost certain to be traded in the next few weeks is Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. Chisholm is a former second baseman who, if he moves to the Bronx, could return to the infield. But what would a transfer package look like for him?

Recently, The Athletic ($) put forward a trade proposal for a Marlins-Yankees swap that would bring Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the Bronx. Here’s the trade:

The first thing to consider about this trade is that it is completely unrealistic. There would be no reason for Miami to trade Chisholm if they were going to get a pitcher like Nestor Cortes in return.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic also pointed this out in his article.

“Miami, however, has no interest in a pitcher like Cortes as a headliner, as they are looking for either juniors or players who are not arbitration-eligible. For Chisholm, they would look for a package centered around right-hander Will Warren and a power hitter like Everson Pereira, with center fielder Jace Avina as the last piece.”

A deal like the one proposed by Bowden could be much more realistic. But even then, the package with the three talents of Warren, Pereira and Avina might not be enough. The Yankees may need to sign another top-15 talent, possibly the aforementioned Selvidge or pitcher Clayton Beeter.

A package for Chisholm would have to include a huge amount of young players. The Marlins will definitely trade him this year while he is more valuable than ever. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees can put together a deal to send him back to the infield.
