Auto show benefits athletes with special needs, Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields

FAIRFIELD, Ohio – Classic car owners fired up their engines for a good cause Sunday at the annual Cruise In For Kids Car Show.

The car show, which celebrated its tenth year, benefits the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields. The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields provides accessible and inclusive baseball fields and opportunities for special-ability athletes of all ages, according to their website.

Mark Fehreng, who brought his song to Sunday’s car show, said it was an understatement to say these fields hold a special place in his heart. He said they make sure everyone knows they can play baseball, regardless of their ability.

Fehreng’s daughter plays on the fields, which give her “a chance and opportunity to play like any other child,” he said.

“Words cannot describe it,” he said. “It brings tears to my eyes when I see the children out there.”

Sunday’s car show boosted fundraising for the fields, and while admission to the show was free, it cost $20 to register a car.

Fehreng registered his 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.

Organizers told WCPO 9 that hundreds of cars were involved in the show.

In addition to the car show itself, the day also featured food, music, raffles, entrance prizes and more, all benefitting the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields. There was also an appearance by Joey The Can-Do Kangaroo, the baseball fields’ mascot.

In a press release, organizers said the annual car show raised over $140,000 to support the Nuxhall Foundation’s sports and recreational experiences for people with special needs.

Kim Nuxhall, president and chairman of the board of the Nuxhall Foundation and the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields, said in a statement that there is no better crew than the team behind the car show year after year. Steve Crain and Ken Rhodus led a team of more than a dozen volunteer committee members to organize the car show.

“This is a team of volunteers that is truly firing on all cylinders and driven by heart and spirit,” Nuxhall said in a statement. “The funds they raise through this event help us provide our athletes with exceptional opportunities in the big leagues.”
