Orphaned baby raccoon rescued from wheel well of car in Dedham – Boston News, Weather, Sports

DEDHAM, MASS. (WHDH) – An orphaned baby raccoon was rescued from the wheel well of a car this week and taken to a wildlife rehabilitator for care.

Dedham Animal Control responded to a 911 call Tuesday to rescue the animal from inside the vehicle. Officers removed the baby raccoon, examined it for any injuries and placed it in a box next to the car, Dedham Animal Control said.

Officials hoped the mother raccoon would hear her baby and come back to look for it, but according to animal control, the young raccoon was still there Wednesday morning.

“The goal with young wild animals is to never consider them orphaned before giving nature a chance to respond,” Dedham Animal Control said in a Facebook post.

Although the raccoon was not picked up, officials took it to Hare of the Dog Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Pembroke.

The baby raccoon is “doing well, has a healthy appetite and some temperament,” animal control said.

“Unfortunately, no mom came, so she was placed in our care,” Hare of the Dog said in a Facebook post. “She is doing very well in quarantine and is expected to make a full recovery and eventually be released back into the wild.”
