Vigil commemorates American Fork couple who died in murder-suicide

Following the murder-suicide in American Fork, relatives brought light into the darkness on Sunday evening.

A candlelight vigil was held at Art Dye Park where friends could remember Kerilyn and Olin Johnson and support their children who lost their parents.

Hundreds of people gathered to pay their last respects to the Johnson family.

A spokeswoman for the family, Melanie Cartwright, said the vigil was intended to shed light on the situation and let the family know that there is a whole community of people who love and support them.

“I think the best way we can honor Kerilyn and Olin is to take care of the things they loved most, and what they loved most was their family,” Cartwright said. “That’s what we want to do tonight.”

Cartwright said the couple were integral to the community and always helped everyone.

“This can be a confusing and difficult time. Everyone is grieving in their own way, so we can only hope that everyone can find a source of strength and healing in this sense of community. We know that being together is empowering,” Cartwright said.

The couple’s memories shared during the vigil were recorded and will reportedly be preserved in books for the couple’s children.
