Gruesome three-car crash brings traffic to a standstill on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie

Loud sirens could be heard on Route 9 on Sunday afternoon after a serious car crash occurred at a busy intersection.

Several serious accidents occurred in the Hudson Valley over the weekend. It is unclear why dangerous incidents seem to be occurring more frequently. Some have pointed to the busy time of year when schools end and vacations begin, while others have blamed the heat wave as the cause of drivers’ distraction.

Whatever the reason, several recent accidents have shown how dangerous driving can be and why it is important to stay focused on the road.

Severe car accident in Poughkeepsie, New York

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday, the New Hamburg Fire Department was called to an incident on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie. According to emergency responders, a three-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Route 9 and Vassar Road. One of the vehicles was reportedly on fire.

Images of the accident show a totally destroyed SUV and a mail truck in the southbound left-turn lane of Route 9. Skid marks on the roadway lead to another heavily damaged vehicle that appears to have collided head-on with the other.

Although the cause of the accident is unclear, some witnesses claim one of the cars may have run a red light. Poughkeepsie City Police investigated the scene for most of the evening, closing several lanes and backing up traffic in front of the Poughkeepsie Galleria. Route 9 was not fully reopened until after 10 p.m.

The New Hamburg Fire Department said the occupants of the vehicles were taken to the hospital but did not provide information on the extent of their injuries.
