Newmont is the only mining company to make it into TIME magazine’s top 100 greenest companies

According to TIME, the companies at the top of the list have joined some of the most respected climate programs, including the Science Based Targets Initiative’s (SBTi) 1.5-degree goal, and they have received high ratings from the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).

TIME and Statista set high standards for companies regarding their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emission reductions in 2021 and 2022, and the share of renewable energy used in the company’s operations.

Schneider Electric tops the list with 88.86 out of 100 points. Its environmental initiatives include the development of energy management software and services. Schneider has also set ambitious goals to become carbon neutral by 2025.

It is important to note that many high-ranking companies operate in industries that do not produce many physical products, such as banking, technology and consulting.

With a score of 71.64, Newmont ranked first among all companies in the mining industry.

Newmont’s 2030 environmental targets include reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 32%, reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity (Scope 1 and 2) by 32% and reducing absolute Scope 3 emissions (joint venture assets and supply chain) by 30%.

In addition to Newmont, five other raw materials and mining companies are represented in the top 500, including Hindustan Zinc (239th place) and Aurubis (468th place).
