Revolutionary Kentucky-made device to treat opioid use disorder receives FDA approval

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (WKYT) – It’s a revolutionary device in the world of addiction treatment.

“This can have a profound impact on our state. There’s no doubt about that,” said Mike Cox of Isaiah House.

The video above shows the NET device, a tool for treating opioid use disorder offered exclusively at Isaiah House facilities. Neurostimulation therapy reduces opioid withdrawal symptoms within 24 hours.

“Adhesive electrodes are placed behind the ears. A carefully programmed series of tiny electrical impulses stimulates the body’s natural production of endorphins in the brain.”

In addicts, these naturally produced chemicals are broken down or replaced with the drug of choice. When they stop taking the drug, their body begins to experience withdrawal symptoms. This remedy reduces withdrawal symptoms significantly, or as Mike Cox says, almost miraculously.

“If a person can overcome acute withdrawal symptoms quickly, they can begin treatment sooner than they otherwise would. Many people want help in overcoming their addiction, but are afraid of getting sick and experiencing withdrawal symptoms.”

According to the state, 80 percent of overdose deaths in 2023 were due to opioids. This device, a non-drug treatment that fits in the palm of your hand, could save many lives.

“I think this will change everything.”

Cox said they have only collected data on opioid use so far, but he believes it could work wonders for other substance abuse disorders as well.

Residents of Meade, Scott, Bullitt and Shelby counties are eligible for free treatment thanks to funding from local emissions grants.
