The design of the Apple Watch Series 10 will not make me upgrade from the Ultra 2

While the Apple Watch Series 10 design may have leaked this week, I’m still not convinced I want to give up my Apple Watch Ultra 2. While Apple could upgrade the display to be on par with the company’s Ultra model, there are several benefits exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 that will keep me from upgrading.

According to the leak, Apple is planning an Apple Watch Series 10 with a larger display, but the case will be thinner than the Apple Watch Ultra. With a completely new design, Cupertino seems to be making all current Apple Watch straps incompatible with this new generation. Aside from the fact that all my current straps would be useless, I have several reasons not to throw away my beloved Apple Watch Ultra 2.

For example, I love the Apple Watch Ultra 2 Giant battery. With Apple planning to make its devices thinner (this design change started with the M4 iPad Pro), it’s only natural that the battery could take a big hit – or at least Apple will do its best to improve software reliability to make it more similar to the previous generation. However, a smaller battery also means it will degrade faster.

I also love his Robust design. I love running outside, and after almost a year, my Apple Watch Ultra 2 looks as good as new. With the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10, it will probably be more fragile – at least compared to the Apple Watch Ultra.

It is also important to mention that I love the Action button and that Siren mode. While I don’t plan on using it, it’s better to be safe than sorry. I find the Action Button is great for easily accessing and interacting with the Workout app during a workout.

And last but not least, I’ve been collecting Apple Watch bands for more than half a decade, so I’m not ready to give up my collection just yet. With rumors that Apple will offer a new band connector, I’m not looking to buy new ones just yet.

This might prompt me to upgrade my Apple Watch Ultra 2

If the Apple Watch Series 10 isn’t enough, a new Ultra variant could be a real reason for me to upgrade, especially if we get new health sensors. Apple has been working on several new sensors, but it’s unclear when they might be released.

Additionally, Apple has been working on a new design for the Apple Watch Ultra, but it seems like it will be a few years before it hits the market, so until then I’ll keep my current model. I’m also waiting to see if the new straps will have a FineWoven moment.
