Western Maryland nonprofit prepares for charitable, day-long bike adventure along the C&O Canal

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Maryland (DC News Now) — In western Maryland, final plans are underway for an annual summer ritual, four grueling days of biking.

But the adventure serves a very good cause. The 140-year-old nonprofit organization has a major impact on Washington County.

The Great Bicycle Tour will take place from July 13-16. During these days, San Mar Family and Community Services will lead cyclists along the C&O Canal. The organization has sponsored the tour for 37 years.

“This canal adventure is a fully supervised bike ride,” said Elisa Mabina of San Mar. “Our cyclists will travel from Cumberland to Washington, DC, covering 184.5 miles.”

“These are the best four days of the summer because it is such a community-building experience,” Mabina said.

The volunteer organization works with children in difficult situations and helps bring stability into their lives.

“This will help foster children, children who need care and mental health services, and communities and families who are in difficulty,” Mabina said.

“Our riders and sponsors help us have such a positive and important impact on the community,” says Joanna Peters of San Mar.
