Portsmouth couple wakes up to find their car damaged by shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police responded to a shooting call early Friday morning. While no one was injured, a car was badly damaged.

A woman named Jessica said she woke up early in the morning to the gunshots, but she and her husband did not realize until several hours later that one of the shots had hit their car.

She said this was not the first shooting outside their home, near the intersection of Winchester Drive and Loudoun Avenue, since they moved there in 2016.

At around 2:30 a.m. they heard the gunshots and looked outside to make sure everyone was OK. When they saw no one, they went back to sleep.

She said her husband had to leave for work early, and when he came out and got in the car, he noticed something was wrong.

“He gets in the car, tries to defrost the windshield and notices that the rear wiper blade is blocked. When he turns around, there is a scratch in the window. When he gets out, he sees that there are police cars and police officers talking to some neighbors. So he calls the police officer over and shows him the damage.”

She said the officer told her husband her car wasn’t the only one hit. She said officers remained at the scene for a while Thursday night, collecting evidence.
