Italians and Swiss have long had close relations, they share a border and Italian is one of Switzerland’s official languages. But in Berlin, all of that will be forgotten.
Italy and Switzerland have met 61 times, the most frequent opponents for both countries. And although the Swiss have only beaten the Italians eight times, most recently in 1993, they have been more convincing in Germany.
Switzerland almost finished first in Group A, but conceded an equaliser in injury time in their final match against hosts Germany and showed with their performance that they are not afraid of anyone in this tournament.
Italy needed a late goal to secure a 1-1 draw with Croatia and advance, but the defending champions failed to impress – unlike at Euro 2020, when they easily got through the group stage and comfortably defeated the Swiss.
