Bryce James on his father waiting to be drafted to retire

LeBron James’ greatness can’t last that long, right?

Even his son, 17-year-old Bryce James, doesn’t think that will happen. In a recent Instagram Live, Bryce responded to a Los Angeles Lakers fan who asked if he thought his dad wouldn’t stop until his youngest son was drafted.

“I’m not going to lie, this is an overdose,” Bryce said on the show.

OD is slang for “too much”.

“Waiting until I…nah,” Bryce said. “That’s too much. They asked if I think my dad will still be in the league when I get drafted? That’s too much. Nah…he’ll be 42, dude.”

The oldest player in NBA history was Nat Hickey, who played a game in the 1947-48 season just two days before his 46th birthday. In another sport, former NFL quarterback Tom Brady ended his career at age 45. In the NBA, Vince Carter ended his career in 2020 at age 43. Michael Jordan ended his career in 2003 at age 40. LeBron turns 40 on December 30th.

As LeBron entered the later seasons of his career, questions arose about when he planned to retire. LeBron said the only thing left for him to do was play with or against his eldest son, Bronny, on an NBA court. On June 27, the Lakers selected Bronny in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. Other teams were reportedly interested in Bronny, but agent Rich Paul called them and said if they drafted him, he would play in Australia for the next year.

In his 21st season in the NBA, LeBron averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game.
