Analysis: The first fight of the evening brought the first surprise at UFC 303. In the first round, it was a persistent offensive by the underdog Oliveira. After the first round, he was in the lead and outperformed Simon by more than twice as many hits.

Towards the end of the second round, Simon blocked a kick to the calf, which clearly caused Oliviera pain. Oliviera struck after the siren sounded to end the second round. Simon managed two takedowns, Oliveira had none, but the underdog led by 31-15 punches. Oliviera led the second round, but he was clearly hampered in the third round.

Analysis: The first round was brutal from the start. Just after the four-minute mark, Hernandez picked Tsuruya up and punched him in the head. Hernandez was Tsuruya’s lead hitter in the first round, but Tsuruya kept Hernandez grounded for much of the round.

Hernandez took down Tsuruya right after the first round began. Tsuruya was in trouble for a minute, but soon after, Tsuruya gained the upper hand. The two wrestled for most of the second round. With about two minutes left, Tsuruya almost forced a submission fight, but Hernandez freed a leg at the last moment. Tsuruya took control at the end of the round and landed several clear shots in the final minute.

Hernandez controlled the final round, but Tsuruya effectively bought time and limited the damage. In a five-round fight, the outcome might have been different, but through three rounds, Tsuruya remained undefeated in the UFC.
