HFD uses Air 1 helicopter to rescue two hikers in Wahiawa, Manoa

The Honolulu Fire Department used its Air 1 helicopter today to rescue two hikers in distress at separate locations.

Emergency crews responded to a 911 call at 10:01 a.m. regarding a male hiker who had fallen approximately 100 feet off the Puu Kalena Trail in Wahiawa.

The HFD sent six units with 17 personnel, the first unit arrived at 10:20 a.m. The second unit secured a landing zone for Air 1. The Federal Fire Department also sent three units, including an ambulance.

The man was stuck in a dangerous position on the edge of a cliff, HFD officials said in a press release.

At 10:57 a.m., Air 1 brought rescue personnel to the hiker’s location, assessed his condition and administered life support, HFD said.

The hiker was flown by helicopter to the landing zone and the HFD turned over medical care to the Federal Fire Department at 11:38 a.m., the press release said.

At 12:16 p.m., the HFD with six units and 17 personnel received a distress call about an injured hiker on the Manoa Falls Trail in Manoa.

A woman in her 60s was injured and unable to complete the journey alone, an HFD official said.

The first HFD unit arrived at 12:29 p.m., went to the woman’s side, arrived at 12:43 p.m. and performed a medical examination and basic life support measures, the HFD said.

The woman was safely flown to a nearby airstrip where HFD personnel transferred medical care to EMS personnel at 1:06 p.m.
