Donald Trump says he didn’t get enough praise for his “fantastic” debate

Former President Donald Trump wrote on social media on Saturday that he did not receive enough praise for his “fantastic” debate performance against President Joe Biden during this week’s presidential debate.

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and Biden squared off Thursday night in the first presidential debate of this election cycle. A second debate is scheduled for September, just two months before Election Day. The debate was moderated by CNN in Atlanta and did not have a live audience.

In the subsequent summary, John King, CNN’s chief national affairs correspondent, said Biden’s appearance had sparked a “deep, broad and very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party” after the president stumbled and at times gave incoherent and difficult-to-understand answers. A Biden aide, meanwhile, said: Newsweek Late Thursday night, it was revealed that the president was battling a cold during the debate.

On the other hand, Trump repeatedly made false claims about the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, his environmental record, abortion, and the economy. Although there were misleading statements from both sides, the former president made more than Biden. CNN counted over 30 false statements by Trump, while the network said Biden made at least nine false or misleading statements during the debate.

“As I walked off the stage at the end of the highly anticipated ‘debate’ on Thursday night, moderators, political reporters and everyone else were screaming that I had delivered the best debate performance in the long and storied history of presidential debates. They were all basically saying, ‘Trump was awesome!'” the former president wrote in a post for Truth Social on Saturday morning.

He added: “This topic was everywhere, even on CNN and MSDNC, but by Friday night it was all about Crooked Joe’s poor performance and not so much about how well I did. Oh well, that’s the way it is, but the important thing is that the result is the same!!!”

“MSDNC” is Trump’s name for MSNBC, suggesting that the network shows a bias against the Democratic Party.

Newsweek reached out to the Trump and Biden campaigns via email on Saturday seeking comment.

The presidential race was neck and neck. Days before the debate, national poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight showed Biden leading Trump by a narrow 0.1 to 0.3 points. As of Saturday morning, the aggregator now shows Trump leading Biden by 0.6 points.

Age is a hot topic this election cycle, as Trump just celebrated his 78th birthday and Biden is 81. Biden’s performance in the debate has led some members of the Democratic Party to consider replacing him as their nominee. There is no indication who would be put forward as the nominee, and Biden’s campaign team has not signaled a withdrawal.

Trump is expected to accept the Republican nomination at the Republican National Convention, just days after his conviction on July 11 on 34 counts of falsifying business records after a New York jury found him guilty late last month.

In the case brought by Alvin Bragg, the district attorney of Manhattan, Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records. The case is related to a hush money payment that Michael Cohen, Trump’s lawyer at the time, made to former porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, allegedly to keep her quiet about an affair she allegedly had with Trump. The former president has denied the affair and maintains his innocence, saying the case is politically motivated. He is the first former president to be convicted of a serious crime and has already announced that he intends to appeal the verdict.
