Civilian dies after collision with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s patrol car

One person was killed in a two-car crash involving a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s patrol car in Apple Valley on Saturday.

According to police, the serious collision occurred around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Kiowa Road.

“The driver of the other vehicle was the only occupant and was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene of the accident,” the statement said.

They say the civilian was traveling east on Bear Valley Road in a Toyota Corolla and attempted to turn left in a parking lot when he collided with the patrol car.

Department officials said the patrol unit was “en route to an urgent response” when the accident occurred.

No information was given about the identity of the victim.

According to SBSD, the officer was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said Bear Valley Road between Kiowa Road and Snapping Turtle is expected to be closed for several hours while the investigation continues.

SkyCal flew over the accident scene, where debris was scattered across the road. The Corolla had severe front-end damage, while the SBSD car had some front-end damage.
