Fairview Heights, Illinois – A man was arrested by Fairview Heights police after he set his car on fire with himself inside, leading to a standoff with officers.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., the man set fire to his vehicle while inside it near the 100 block of Durley Drive. He had previously lived in the area and had obtained a restraining order that had not yet been served. Several days prior to this incident, there was a suspicious fire at his home that the State Fire Marshal’s Office has been investigating.
After setting his car on fire, the man fled the vehicle. Police later received reports that he fired a weapon. Eventually, it was determined that the sound of the windows breaking was likely due to the heat of the fire. Fairview Heights officers, along with several other departments, set up a perimeter, believing they had the man surrounded.
A police drone was sent to the scene to help search for the suspect, who was hiding in a vehicle. Despite numerous requests, the man refused to surrender.
Officers used a less-lethal beanbag to break the windows of the vehicle and then fired pepper balls into the vehicle using a pepper ball launcher. The man quickly exited the vehicle and surrendered without incident or injury.
