11 Apple Watch training tips to help you prepare for the Olympics

The 2024 Olympic Games are just around the corner. As the world prepares to watch the best athletes compete, Apple Watch and Apple Fitness+ offer even more ways to inspire you as your daily fitness companion and support your own training program. Plus, more features are coming to watchOS 11 this fall.

To celebrate the Olympic spirit, Apple has teamed up with champion runner Meb Keflezighi for a treadmill workout led by Apple Fitness+ trainer Emily Fayetteville. Meb is an Olympic silver medalist, winner of the Boston and New York City Marathons, and joins you in this 20-minute treadmill workout to inspire you to get moving more.

In addition to Apple Fitness+, Apple aims to motivate you to sit less, move more, and exercise more.

Training tips for the Apple Watch to get you started

Start with your activity rings: The first workout tip for Apple Watch is to start with your Activity rings. You’ll be motivated to have a healthier day by hitting your move, exercise, and stand goals. Later this fall, watchOS 11 will let you customize your daily goals to account for rest days, sick days, and even different calorie goals for each day.

Activity release: When I started running, the first thing I did was share my activity status with my friends. They often motivated me with custom iMessage replies, which brings me to the next tip.

Activity competition: Challenge friends to seven-day individual competitions where you get points based on the percentage of your activity rings. This is great because even if you’re not as active as your friend who goes to the gym every day, Apple Watch tracks your personal goals. It’s not about achieving the same goals as your friends.

Personalized awards: If you complete seven workouts per week, complete a 5K run, or more, you can celebrate those milestones with awards using Apple Watch. I was thrilled to receive my badge for 100 Apple Fitness+ treadmill workouts.

Trends: After a while, Apple will show your trends in your Fitness app summary, so you can see how you’re growing and improving over time. Checking this feature is one of the best Apple Watch workout tips I can give you.

Apple Fitness+ and the Workout app can help you stay consistent

Whether you’re just a fan of Olympic sports or taking your first steps into the world of fitness, did you know that your Apple Watch can track a wide variety of workouts included in the competition?

Running, cycling, swimming, rowing and tennis are just some of the Olympic events your Apple Watch can track for you. You can use these exercises to enhance your training with Apple Fitness+, which offers over 5,000 workouts and meditations.

In this article, I’ll give you more training tips for runners with Apple Watch – and some of the things I’ve done to improve my running metrics.

  • Custom workouts: Create custom workouts with distance and time goals so Apple Watch can guide you with haptic and voice feedback while you run.
  • Racetrack: The routes you repeat most often will be displayed in the Workout app so you can compete against your last or best score.
  • Automatic lane detection: This feature automatically detects when you reach an outdoor trail and uses both Apple Maps data and GPS to provide the most accurate distance, pace and route map.
  • Time to run: In addition to the various treadmill workouts, Apple also offers the Time to Run program, an audio running workout led by Fitness+ coaches. It helps you become a better and more consistent runner while teaching you popular running routes in some of the most notable and iconic locations.

Later this year, you’ll be able to use the Vitals app and Training Load to get better insight into your workouts. However, one of the best Apple Watch workout tips I can give you is to download Gentler Streak, as it understands your body’s needs by tracking your workout and sleep metrics.
