Suspect turns himself in after attempted murder in connection with shooting of Hoover woman in Birmingham

The suspect in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old Hoover woman in Birmingham is in custody.

Demetrious Dewayne Kidd, 41, is charged with capital murder of Nikita Nicole Walker.

Kidd turned himself in to police on Friday, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 2:50 a.m. Saturday and remains held without bail.

Authorities said the charge was a capital crime because it involved robbery.

The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, at a home in the 700 block of New Hill Court.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Walker unconscious on an outside staircase outside the home. Birmingham Fire Department pronounced her dead at the scene.

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, a pregnant woman was shot and killed in Birmingham’s New Hill neighborhood.

Investigators said Walker was at a friend’s house when the suspect got into an argument with her. Kidd is the boyfriend or acquaintance of the victim’s friend.

“He was here disturbing everyone,” Fitzgerald said. “Somehow he and the victim got into an argument and he shot the victim.”

“He is targeting the victim,” he said.

Fitzgerald said Kidd took items belonging to Walker before fleeing.

According to the family, Walker was five months pregnant at the time of her death, but Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy found no signs of pregnancy.
