On the occasion of the 8th anniversary Pokémon GO is hosting a commemorative event that is bringing a ton of new content to the game. Pokémon GO Players who completed the Special Research story “Distracted by Something Shiny” in 2020 are not eligible to purchase the $5 ticket for the Masterwork Research story “Whispers in the Woods.” As Kotaku notes, the purchase option is grayed out for such players. Since both quests reward the player with a shiny Celebi, it may make sense to prevent those who have already acquired the special Pokémon from claiming it again. However, “Whispers in the Woods” is a long-term quest and promises tons of other items, including Ultra Balls, Super Incubators, Rare Candies, and more—things that would otherwise cost far more than $5. With that in mind, developer Niantic’s decision to withhold the new Masterwork Research story from these players may seem like a daunting move.

Pokemon GO players who are not eligible for the Shiny Celebi Quest will receive other bonuses

While these players will not be able to re-participate in the hunt for a specific version of the time-traveling Celebi, there are some other rewards that the game has set aside for them as well. Those who participated in the Distracted by Something Shiny quest will receive double the effective duration of Incense, Daily Adventure Incense, and Lucky Egg duration for the duration of the event. This bonus applies regardless of whether the player has previously completed the quest or not. While these rewards are also useful, they may seem like unfair compensation compared to what the game takes away from certain players. Pokémon GO veterans and has a great chance to upset some of them.

Another decision concerning Pokémon GONiantic’s Meteorite giveaway was recently criticized for forcing players to perform certain actions. Niantic may be criticized again for its handling of the Shiny Celebi quest. Hopefully, consistent player feedback will help the developer better understand the likes and dislikes of the AR game community in the future.
