Which plants can tolerate the summer heat?

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – East Texas is known for its hot, dry summers, which can damage plants. Elizabeth Hoover of Hughes Plant Farm says there is no need to worry, as there are some beautiful flowers that can tolerate higher temperatures.

“This is a species of evergreen called Catharanthus kawaii, and it does really well, like all evergreens, it loves the warmth and it also loves the drought,” Hoover said.

She added that even if you have areas in your yard that remain shady, you still have options.

“Hydrangeas, ferns, begonias, even New Guinea busy Lizzie, all of these are great for shady locations,” Hoover said.

However, if you only have one spot with direct sunlight all day, the way you plant the flower will determine how it will be cared for.

“If you plant the plants in the ground, your water needs will be less than if you plant them in a pot, because a pot can dry out more quickly,” Hoover said.

According to Hoover, mulch can also help keep your plants alive this summer.

“It retains moisture and keeps the weeds down, so it’s definitely a great idea,” Hoover said.

According to Hughes Plant Farm, crepe myrtles are also great for East Texas in the summer because they add beauty to the lawn and are easy to care for.
