Motor Madness unites car lovers despite cancellation of cruise night

ROANOKE, VA – John Strange’s car is older than he is – actually, it’s older than most people.

“It’s a 1933 Chevrolet Master,” Strange said.

Tens of thousands of dollars later, it is his pride and joy.

“I’ve always been interested in cars, especially hot rods and muscle cars, and then I decided to get a hot rod and do it myself,” Strange said.

He told 10 News that he wanted a community with which he could network about cars – and Roanoke was that community for him.

“I’m from Detroit, and when you’re born in Detroit, you’re born with cars. I worked in the auto industry for years, then I retired and moved here,” he said.

Ten years to rebuild – and that’s exactly how many years Strange showed his car at Motor Madness.

Despite the official cancellation of Cruise Night, hundreds of car enthusiasts and over 300 cars lined the streets of downtown Roanoke on Saturday.

Car lovers like David Hollandsworth and his ’67 Beetle, dubbed “The Lemon Drop,” were probably one of the fan favorites of the weekend.

“When it came through my house in the back of the truck, that was my first thought,” Hollandsworth said.

For Hollandsworth, Motor Madness is a way to connect with his friends.

“A friend of mine also has a ’67, so we teamed up,” Hollandsworth said.

But it is also an opportunity to build a lifelong love with people he doesn’t even know.

“Seeing the people, experiencing people coming up to me and asking me questions, seeing their faces, seeing the children,” he said.
