🔬 The debriefing of England’s late comeback and Spain’s crushing win against Georgia

EURO 2024 continued to produce surprises and golden moments as two more knockout matches were played, with the four teams hoping to join Germany and Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Here is the debriefing of Sunday’s action.

What happened? 📝

England scored two goals in 90 seconds to knock Slovakia out of the match. Jude Bellingham scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to force extra time. A minute into extra time, Harry Kane headed the decisive goal for Slovakia, who eventually won 2-1.

They were joined by Spain, who also fell behind against Georgia but later came back in the competition and comfortably defeated the underdog.

Player of the day 🔥

Declan Rice was outstanding in the England lead room, but Nico Williams stole the show for Spain.

The young man has been one of his country’s standout players in this tournament and he underlined that fact once again with a superb goal and assist in a performance that will give Georgian defenders nightmares for the rest of the summer.

Moment of the day 😍

What else could it have been? With a minute of stoppage time remaining, England were facing their heaviest defeat of a major tournament when Jude Bellingham swung into action with an acrobatic shot to force extra time against Slovakia.

Of course, England won and if the English really get going, this goal could go down as one of the most important in England’s history.

It wasn’t enough for Georgia today, but the team will go down in history as history makers by making it through the group stage and their fans certainly let them know how proud they were after their loss to Spain.

Statistics of the day 📊

Lamine Yamal still has the rest of the tournament to go before he can add the title of youngest goalscorer at a European Championship to his resume, but he already has a number of records to his name at national and international level.

He plays with a maturity that is far beyond his years, making it easy to forget how young he is, but the introduction of Jesus Navas reminded everyone how promising his career looks given his performances so far.

What this means 🤔

England (without the suspended Marc Guehi) now faces another tough test in the quarter-finals as they face Switzerland, who knocked reigning champions Italy out of the race.

What they said 🗣️

England’s head coach Gareth Southgate hailed the victory as a big moment for his team and explained: “This is a really strong moment for the team. It’s one thing to win a game with all your star players, but when other players get us over the finish line and feel that they are trusted, that is hugely important for us.”

Meanwhile defender David Hancko couldn’t hide his disappointment.

“I haven’t been this sad about football in a long time. I know it’s just a game, but we were very close to something special; something we dreamed of. We did everything we could to make it happen, but in the end it all turned around. Bellingham’s equalizer was a stab in the heart.”

What’s next? ⏭️

The second half of the round of 16 begins tomorrow. Tournament favourites France face struggling Belgium before Portugal takes on Slovenia. On that day, players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé and Kevin de Bruyne will be in the spotlight.
