Steve Sarkisian raves about Quinn Ewers’ progress: “You can feel that this is his team”

The Texas Longhorns are celebrating their entry into the SEC on Sunday with a parade featuring music and other festivities in Austin. And Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian was there to mark the occasion. He took a few minutes on the SEC Network to talk to the broadcast team about his star quarterback. Quinn Ewers.

Sarkisian spoke about the course of his career in recent years.

“I was just talking to somebody about this the other day. When he came here, it was actually his freshman year. Remember, he graduated high school a year early. Then he comes here and it’s like he’s getting used to being a college quarterback. And then he’s coming out of freshman year,” Sarkisian explained.

“What discipline does it take to be a quarterback? A change in diet. Getting a haircut. What is that? And now that I’m going into my third year with us, I see leadership qualities in Quinn more than ever. It was that process. He learned a system. What it’s like to be in college. And then, okay, growing up in the second year. And now in the third year, you feel that this is your team,” Sarkisian concluded.

Ewers put up impressive numbers last year, completing 69% of his passes for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He should be one of the nation’s top Heisman Trophy contenders this season, especially considering how loaded Texas’ roster is in 2024. The Longhorns made it to the College Football Playoff last year before losing to Washington, and should be among the favorites to bring home the 2025 National Championship.

Ewers was one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school, ranking as the top player in the 2022 cycle according to the On3 Industry Rankings. Before coming to Texas, Ewers enrolled at Ohio State but only stayed there for one semester before deciding to jump into the transfer portal and join the Longhorns in Texas.

Texas has one of the most stacked quarterback rosters in America in 2024, with Ewers as the starter and Arch Manning as the backup. Manning has been impressive this spring and will surely be the most talked-about second quarterback in America, appearing in two games as a freshman in 2023. Coming out of high school, Manning, much like Ewers, was one of the most celebrated quarterback prospects in the country. He was rated the best prospect in America in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
