Sprinter Franziska Djatej commits to Fresno State (2024), ensuring more relay depth in the long term

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is a proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment updates. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that they pursue with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them along the way.

High school students Franziska Djatej has committed to swim at Fresno State next fall. Djatej is from Spokane, Washington, where she swims with the Spokane Waves Aquatic Team.

She attends Mead Senior High School in Spokane, which does not sponsor a swim program but has several students who swim for the Spokane Waves. Although she does not compete in the high school season, she has reached major finals at several club meets – including the 2024 Western Zone Senior Championships and the 2023 Boise Sectionals.

At Zones in April, she placed third in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.84 and fifth in the 100 butterfly in 56.19. These swims, as well as her 11th-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.95), were all personal bests, and that was her last ever meet.

Best times in yards:

  • 50 free – 23,75
  • 100 free – 51,95
  • 200 m freestyle – 1:56.62
  • 100 m butterfly – 56.19
  • 200 medley – 2:03.84

Djatej has suffered major setbacks since first announcing her commitment in the fall. Her time in the 200m individual medley has dropped from 2:06.22 to 2:03.84. Although she signed up as a top sprinter, the 200m individual medley is likely to be her best event when she heads to California.

Her best time in the 200 medley would have earned her 6th place at Fresno State and the C-finals at the Mountain West Conference Championships last season.

She would also have scored some points in the 100-meter butterfly.

The Bulldogs return with most of their sprint core team, including 49.93 100 freestyle runners Wiktoria Dabrowska and 22,90 50 Freestylers Mackenzie Hutlerwho helped lead to a 3rd place finish in the 200m freestyle relay at last year’s Mountain West Championships. This will make it difficult for Djatej, as a freshman, to break into the sprint relays.

However, their commitment is crucial to the long-term strength of the team; of the top four 100m freestylers returning next season, three are either in their final year or postgraduate students.

She is a freshman in the class of Makaela Perea, Ryley ClarkAnd Sienna Cheng-Luceyand British backstroke swimmer Ella Turner. Although it is a tight class, it is versatile, with most of the group able to compete in multiple events immediately – including the Western Zone finalist. Sienna Cheng-Luceywho would have reached the B final in the 100m backstroke at the conference championships last year.
