How to complete the Emboar Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

The latest 7-star Tera Raid appears in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is Emboar, the Unovan starter who is sick of all Fire/Fighting types. Emboar’s strategy is based on using very strong moves – made even stronger by his Hidden Ability – and then taking advantage of his high HP to negate the effects of recoil damage.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How to evolve Finizen and unlock the hero form

Finizen is a new dolphin-type Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet with a unique evolution method. Here’s how to evolve it and use its Hero Form.

While Emboar can take down anything it can hit that doesn’t have a high enough defense, it has no answer for Ground-types. It’s going to be a long battle, though – Emboar’s bulk makes it an uphill battle to get through before time runs out, and a critical hit can spell doom for most teams.

Information about the event

Emboar is available until Sunday and then come back from 21 to 23 June. When you complete the raid for the first time, you can catch Emboar and receive the TM for Wild Charge.

Emboar has perfect IVs, his hidden ability, and the unique Mightiest Mark. You can find them in special black Tera Crystal caves around Paldea.

If you don’t see any crystals on your map, connect to the internet and open the Poke Portal.

Emboar’s moveset is complete built around his hidden ability, Reckless. Reckless increases the power of knockback moves by 20 percent. In normal gameplay, this advantage would be offset by the Pokémon taking more knockback damage, but Tera Raid Emboar has about 14,000 hit points, The recoil damage is therefore negligible.

As you can see, most of Emboar’s moves are very powerful and cause knockback damage, but
It offers no protection for Ground-type Pokémon, so you can use that to your advantage.

Fortunately, Bulk-Up is a special movement that it can only be used twice when it’s at 40 percent HP, so you don’t have to worry about it boosting its stats.

The best Pokémon for solo Emboar

A screenshot of a picnic in Pokemon Violet with Badgerbun, Archaludon and Annihilape

There are several Pokémon that I have used to defeat Emboar on my own, but unfortunately none of them are as consistent as I would like because Emboar’s critical hits ignore your defense boosts, and thus nullify any attempt you make.

In all of these builds, you can increase your chances of winning by hyper training your Pokemon in Montenevra, using PP Up or PP Max on all of your main attack moves, and Reset until you get a raid with a Staraptor or Tuaros for Intimidation or a Gardevoir for Life Dew.

If you’re having trouble gathering supplies to train your Pokémon, the second week of this event will feature Blissey Raids that will drop additional Tera Shards and Exp Candy.

Dachshund is a hot dog

Dachshund’s ability The well-baked body makes it immune to fire attacks. Add the Ground Tera type and Emboar can’t hit you with half of its repeatable moves and you resist Head Smash.

The main problems with this strategy are whether Emboar hits you with Flare Blitz often enough to make your defense adequate and, again, whether it’s critical hits.

Use the following build:

Capability

Tera Type

Held object

Nature

Movements

Electric vehicles

level

Well baked body

Floor

metronome

Modest

Mud Slap, Tera Blast, Body Press

252 Defense, 252 Attack, 4 HP

100

Use Mud Slap three times at the start of the fight. As soon as you can, Terastalize and start spamming Tera Blast. The metronome will make the movement stronger with each hit, This will allow you to deal enough damage to deplete Emboar’s HP.

Using Cheers does not reset the metronome counterso every time your health gets red, use a cheer to heal again. If you run out of Tera Blast PP, Use Body Press to get rid of any remaining health on Emboar.

Healing Cheers randomly heal 20–100 percent of a Pokémon’s HP, so this is another area where you can just get terribly unlucky.

If you are lucky enough to have friends with whom you can coordinate, Combine Badgerbun with a Pokémon that uses Life Dew, Helping Hand, or Acid Spray to improve Badgerbun’s damage output. Still, be careful if Emboar rolls over something with poor defense.

This is not a strategy that works well in random online games, as Badgerbun needs the full timer to do enough damage.

Archaludon takes hits like a champion

A screenshot from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet showing a battle between Tera Archaludon and an Emboar.

Archaludon’s Endurance ability is very useful because it increases your defense every time you get hit, not just when you get hit by certain moves.

The disadvantages are that Archaludon is locked behind the DLC, and of course, a bad critical hit can ruin your run.

Relaxed

Reflect, Iron Defense, Body Press

252 Defense, 252 HP

Use Reflect on your first turn, Then use Body Press until Emboar resets your stats. Once this happens, use Iron Defense twice to give Archaludon maximum defense.

If you want, you can use Reflect again here.

From here Spam Body Press until Emboar passes outand cheer when your health drops into the red zone. When you run out of Body Press PP, finish off Emboar with Earthquake.

Archaludon is better suited for online raids, but be aware that this strategy won’t work if you’re teamed up with people who faint often.

Annihilape, the Tera Raid classic

A screenshot from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet showing Annihilape evolving into a ghost type

Annihilape is very well his signature move Rage Fistwhich becomes stronger with every direct hit and Fainting does not reset the counter.

Annihilape’s greatest weakness is his fragilityas it is not the best for surviving so many hits. However, the Shell Bell can help here.

Capability

Tera Type

Held object

Nature

Movements

Electric vehicles

level

Defiant

Spirit

Shell bell

Unyielding

Build Mass, Rage Fist

252 Defense, 252 Attack, 4 HP

Spam Rage Fist until you pass out. That should be enough for you to use your Terastalization when you come back. Use Bulk Up twice before terastalizing. From there you spam Rage Fist, Use the Heal Cheer if you get burned.

When Emboar uses Bulk Up, use it twice more myself. Then spam Rage Fist until Emboar is defeated. As long as you can stay aliveThis should allow you to break through Emboar’s HP bar and win the fight.

Any strategy that causes your Pokémon to faint is bad for casual online play, but if you have friends who can reliably help you boost Annihilape’s stats, you’ll be fine.
