Chase after stolen car ends with accident in Whitehaven, 2 injured

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – A man is in custody after driving a stolen vehicle into several cars in Whitehaven, sending two people to the hospital, according to Memphis police.

Memphis Police responded to a call about a suspicious person in the 3100 block of Hernando Road.

Officers pursued a stolen vehicle that fled the scene. The suspect allegedly collided with an MPD patrol car as it attempted to speed away.

This officer is expected to be well.

According to MPD, the suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle after the accident and attempted to flee, but was quickly arrested by officers.

Police say the suspect will be registered and charged after he is released from hospital, but is expected to recover.

Akeyla Hawkins says her mother is recovering after she was hit while driving near the intersection of Millbranch and Raines Road. “I jumped up so fast. I didn’t know if I was leaving or coming. All I know is I heard my mom had been in an accident.”

A man at the scene said he witnessed the whole thing.

“I was walking down the road and (saw) the car chasing the truck. I took my daughter and came back and he had completely crashed and hit someone else’s car,” Jeremy Taylor said. “We (saw) him speeding away. He was probably going 80, maybe 100. I had to pull over and get out of his way.”
