Man faces drug charges after traffic stop with small children in car

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) – A man is facing drug charges after he was stopped with small children in his vehicle and officers smelled marijuana.

Kortrell D. Johnson, Jr. was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, endangering the life or health of a child, improper lane usage and improper turn signal.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, on June 20 at approximately 7:55 p.m., officers observed a vehicle committing several traffic violations on Route 148 northbound in Herrin. They stopped the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Johnson Jr. and said three children, ages 2, 3 and 13 days old, were with him. While speaking with him, officers noticed a strong odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle.

Officers searched the vehicle and found a white crystal-like substance that field tested positive for meth, a black bag containing five alprazolam tablets and two hypodermic syringes that field tested positive for meth. They said the syringes were wrapped in a diaper next to one of the children. They also found 15 unlocked bags labeled “premium cannabis” on the rear floor.

A report was made to the Ministry of Children and Families and the children were taken to their mother.

Johnson Jr. was taken to the Williamson County Jail.
